New Zealand adventures

When there are so much New Zealand adventures to enjoy, you don't just want to drive your New Zealand camper van during your holiday, do you? That is to say, bungee jumping, jetboating or zorbing are not the adventures we have in mind when we're talking about New Zealand adventures (though we really enjoyed watching people bungee jump). No, we rather refer to activities like kayaking, horse riding, walking, golfing, wine tasting, etc., which can be real adventures too!

(Note: if you arrived on this page hoping to find more information about the 'classic' New Zealand adventures, check out the website of Queenstown, the 'adventure capital of the world'.)

  • Bathing in hot pools
Have you ever experienced how relaxing soaking in a mineral hot pool can be? No? Well, find out at the Polynesian Spa in Rotorua. Besides, there are a lot more New Zealand adventures to experience in Rotorua than just bathing in hot pools: walking between boiling mud pools and balancing on the edge of a crater, to name just a few!

  • Walking on a glacier
Ever walked on a real glacier? This is your chance! The Franz Josef Glacier is a wonderful glacier, that's actually sliding forward instead of retreating, like most other glaciers! There are glacier excursions for every fitness level, from half day and full day trips to helihikes.

  • Golfing
If you love golfing, do visit some of New Zealand's exceptional golf courses. Like the one in Arrowtown for example. Or book a golf round on the championship course in Auckland.

  • Horse trekking
Horse trekking is a fantastic way to explore the New Zealand countryside. There are ample opportunities for half day, one day and multi day treks, both on the North and the South Island.

  • Kayaking
Though we never kayaked before, we enjoyed our first kayak trip in the Marlborough Sounds so much, that soon after we were off again for a two day trip. However, if you still feel a bit insecure about your kayaking skills, start with a guided tour.

  • Cycling
If you like cycling, consider hiring a bycicle together with your camper van. A New Zealand camper van rental company that provides bicycle racks and modern bicycles for hire is United Campervans. The bicycles are suitable for both road use and moderate off road conditions. Suitable models are available for children. A helmet (compulsory in New Zealand), cycle lock and repair kit are supplied with each bicycle.

  • Paragliding
Would you like to admire New Zealand from a totally different point of view? Then try tandem paragliding! Though we didn't experience it ourselves yet, we'll definitely try it out next time we're in New Zealand.

  • Fishing
If you like fishing, make sure you check out the website of Fishing in New Zealand (to do so, click on the link 'Fishing' above).

  • Touring the Milford Sound by boat
Ever imagined that one of the most beautiful places of New Zealand is also one of the wettest? Well, it is. Even if it's raining cats and dogs, we think you shouldn't skip a boat tour in the Milford Sound.

  • Walking
Though 'walking' doesn't sound very much like an adventure, in New Zealand it really can be! We set out on 'New Zealand's best one day hike', the Tongariro Crossing, and found it indeed a beautiful walk!

  • Wine tasting
And finally, don't leave New Zealand without having tasted some of the excellent wines of Hawkes Bay, Martinborough, or Marlborough (or all three)!
