Christchurch accommodation
When looking for Christchurch accommodation when you travel to New Zealand, you don't need to worry: there's a wide choice within each accommodation category. Whether you prefer a luxury hotel, a friendly bed & breakfast or an inexpensive backpackers lodge, it shouldn't be a problem to find something to your liking. With its relaxed and friendly atmosphere, Christchurch is an ideal location to overcome a jetlag before you collect your New Zealand camper van and start exploring the South Island. (Note: when you start your New Zealand camper van vacation in Auckland, read our suggestions about Auckland accommodation.)
Christchurch is the largest city on the South Island, though it's still much smaller than Auckland. The heart of the city is Cathedral Square and its surroundings. The four avenues of Moorhouse, Fitzgerald, Bealy and Deans more or less form the borders of the city centre. As Christchurch is not as busy as Auckland, we suggest you look for accommodation within those avenues, or just beyond (for example Colombo in the City or the Copthorne Hotel).
That way you'll be within walking distance of Christchurch's main attractions. Just avoid the area south of Cathedral Square when you favour real quiet locations, as this area seems to have the greatest concentration of shops, restaurants and bars.
Tips
When staying in Christchurch, make sure you don't miss:
- The wizard -- This former sociology lecturer is appointed the first Wizard of New Zealand. Watch his performance at Cathedral Square, in summer every weekday at 1 pm.
- The Arts Centre -- Especially during the weekends, these former university buildings are well worth a visit. Restaurants, small food stalls, all kinds of shops and galleries, a craft market, musicians, no chance to be bored here! The Arts Centre is only a 10-minute walk from Cathedral Square.
- The botanical gardens -- Don't leave Christchurch, the 'Garden City', without paying a visit to the spectacular botanical gardens, located in Hagley Park. Besides an impressive collection of plants and trees, you'll find a herb garden, a rose garden and several conservatories with tropical and indoor plants. And on top of all that, it's a really nice place to hang out on a sunny day!
